What is Taxi Insurance?
Taxi insurance is for 'hire and reward' operation of a road worthy vehicle to be used on the public highway. Remember all vehicles on the road require motor insurance. Taxi insurance is an extension of this, covering black cab insurance, public hire insurance, minicab insurance, private hire insurance and hackney carriage insurance. As part of the valid of the process a valid MOT (unless less than 3 years old), relevant licence from your local licencsing authority is also required.
What is the difference between black cab and private hire?
Black Cab, public hire or hackney carriage refers to 'hire and reward' taxi which can be hailed in the street, operate from a formal taxi rank or can be booked. Each district will have its own by laws governing black cab opertions however the over riding laws will apply.
Minicab or private hire refers to 'hire and reward' taxi which can only be prebooked. Private hire taxi drivers must never be flagged down or operate from a formal taxi rank. Again each district will have specific bylaws affecting operation, which include where the rear taxi badge is, the roof sign if applicable.
Can my taxi insurance cover anyone to drive my taxi?
You will need to check your taxi insurance policy to see if it is named driver(s) or any driver status, however, IF it has any driver cover, these drivers MUST have a valid taxi licence. It can not be used by non badged drivers.
What type of vehicles can be used as a Taxi?
The local licensing authority will dictate exactly what vehicles can be used as taxis in their area however the following vehicles are used as taxis across the country:
- standard car i.e. saloon, estate, hatchback 5 seater cars, with taxi drivers preferring diesel due to economy
